How to Properly Take Care of Your Shoes

Apr 25th 2017

Now that winter is over, we won’t need to deal with the snow and ice for awhile. And now you don’t have to worry about any rock salt ruining your new pair of shoes while you’re walking into work and thinking about that important meeting that you have later with some clients. But even though spring and summer tend to be milder than winter, you still have to take care of your shoes if you want to keep them in shape for a longer period of time.

At Sherman Brothers Shoes, we probably care about your shoes as much as you do. In this blog, we’re going to tell you how to properly care for your shoes to keep them in shape longer. Here’s how to properly take care of your shoes:

1. Polish Your Shoes! - Nothing protects shoes better than keeping your shoes cleaned and polished. A good carnauba wax polish used often but in small quantities is the most necessary element for perfect maintenance of your shoes. First, clean off any dirt on your shoes using a good horse hair brush or soft cloth. Second, apply the polish to the shoes and work it into the leather in a circular motion. Let the polished shoes sit for a five minutes. Lastly, using the horsehair brush, buff the leather with the brush until the leather shines.

2. Occasionally clean the insides of your shoes - If odor tends to be a problem, the best way to solve it is by cleaning the insides of your shoes from time to time. You can be the judge of how often. Swab them with alcohol or even a drop of tea tree oil, which helps prevent fungus.

3. Try to alternate pairs - We’re guessing that you probably built at least a small collection of shoes over the years. Even if you have a favorite go-to pair that can wear to just about any occasion, it’s still a good idea to switch them up and alternate pairs every once in awhile. This gives them some time to breathe.

4. Wear sock liners or hose - You may think regular socks will be fine, but it’s actually better to wear sock liners or hose with your shoes. This helps protect them from perspiration, which eventually erodes the insoles.
